Couplings
14.6. – 11.7.2014
Julieta Aranda, Jess Arndt, Kerry Downey and Joanna Seitz, in collaboration with Jen Rosenblit, Rochelle Goldberg, Nicolàs Guagnini, Dmitri Hertz, Dustin Hodges, Lee Maida, Marlie Mul, Carlos Reyes, and Karin Schneider.
Suggesting position, the intimate fitting of parts and the means by which a void engulfs matter, “coupling” is a term upon which twisting mass yields a grip and onto which our eyes fix. The artworks presented here are forms — models onto which the body is mapped and reconfigured. Upon them we project sexuality, male and female, conceptual and corporeal pinned down into one view, until these, too, twist beyond our grasp. Such projections demonstrate the body in construction, the way in which gender is slung upon it. Within this procedure we are asked about desire: where is it located and how? Corporeality and mental calculation inform one another, reciprocally erecting a circuit — transmission and reception — in flux.
